I regularly get asked about “my process for creating logos” and I know other designers have shared theirs. I thought I’d join in on the trend and lift the curtains for one of my favorite past projects. Let’s go take a peek!
A few years ago, this client came to me to revitalize the logo of their senior placement agency. The previous logo had been done quickly by a member of their staff and wasn’t fitting their image well anymore. They wanted something that had a mid-century modern vibe to fit the rest of their brand’s visuals. We settled on a palette of teal, red, blue, and creamy yellow to use for the potential logo as these were colors that were popular during the mid-century era (the 1950s and 1960s)
I always do at least an hour or two of research on the business that I’m helping to re-style. I look at what makes them special. I look at what their industry is doing and not doing. If they have special requests like this client did with the mid-century modern look, then I look up their request too. Typically, I do an additional 1-2 hours on a request like this. Every once in a while, I get fascinated by something and do more research than that. Everyone I create a logo for is guaranteed at least 3-4 hours of research.
Next up I started drawing, for this one, I used popular motifs of the era and used the best of those drawings to create the options for the client to review
They chose one they liked best and gave me a little feedback on some changes they wanted to see, which I happily did for them.
After this was completed, they approved it. They still love it and it’s prominently featured on their Facebook Page.
