When I started my business I was given a lot of advice on how to get customers. One of the pieces of advice I got was to think like my audience. It didn’t make sense to me then, but it makes a lot more sense to me now. Here are few things I’ve learned that will help you think more like your audience
I’m operating here on the assumption that you’ve been in business a while now and know who makes up your audience. If you don’t, that would be your first step. I have a great freebie (purplerosegraphics.com/freebie) that can help you get this process started if you need to figure out who your ideal client is.
Pull out or write down a paper with your ideal client be as specific as possible. Now really look at their situation and start figuring out what you would say or do if you were in their position, and were looking at your product or service. For example, if you’re a business coach for struggling entrepreneurs, ask yourself when I was a struggling entrepreneur what was important to me? What was I afraid of? What do I have now that I wish I had then? Keep quizzing yourself until you get a complete picture of that person.
Another version of the same thing is to look at a client you loved working with and figure out what they needed/wanted and how you helped them. Write it down. Be as specific as you can right down to how they speak and/or write.
Neither of these ways is 100% accurate, but it’ll give you a good start. Ultimately, thinking like your audience is an exercise and lesson in empathy. It’s about putting yourself in someone else’s proverbial shoes and figuring out how you would feel if you were in their position. It can be a very hard thing to do!
The best way to really know what your ideal client struggles with and how you can help them is to do market research and actually ask them.
However you choose to do it, whether you ask them or take your best guess, thinking like your audience will help you create content and graphics that resonate with them leading to more sales!
